Fellowships awarded to boost research into health and social care
Two local authority colleagues from the North East have secured prestigious Fellowships from the National Institute for Health and Care Research to develop their research. Their work will be supported by Fuse.
Fuse Associate Scott Lloyd, Advanced Public Health Practitioner at Middlesbrough Council has been awarded a NIHR Doctoral Local Authority Fellowship to continue his research on the impact of advertising on public wellbeing.
In 2021, Scott secured funding for a Pre-Doctoral Local Authority Fellowship with the support of Fuse to develop his research on the same subject.
This includes exploring the impact of Swindon Borough Council introducing an advertising policy that restricts the promotion of food and drink products that are high in fat, salt or sugar on their property.
Scott will be supervised by Ashley Adamson, former Fuse Director and Professor of Public Health Nutrition at Newcastle University.
Kate Dawson, Safeguarding Lead Nurse at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has been awarded a NIHR Pre-Doctoral Local Authority Fellowship to scope out her research ideas. The areas of focus for Kate’s award will be understanding child behaviour in the context of significant harm and exploring: ‘Is child behaviour a non-verbal disclosure that they are suffering significant harm from the parent or caregiver?’.
Kate will be supervised by Professor Ruth McGovern, lead of the Early Life and Adolescence Cluster in Fuse, from Newcastle University.
The NIHR Local Authority Academic Fellowship programme is designed to support the academic ambitions of individuals wishing to develop as health and/or social care researchers while remaining employed within local councils or their commissioned services.
The Fellowships are 100% funded, including covering all salary costs.
Anyone interested in applying to the NIHR Local Authority Academic Fellowship programme can contact the NIHR Research Support Service Specialist Centre for Public Health, delivered by Newcastle University and Partners, for advice and guidance.
