Editorial takes aim at trade negotiations
An editorial in the latest Journal of Public Health co-authored by Fuse associate Professor Ted Schrecker warns that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) ‘could be hazardous to your health’.
TTIP is a far-reaching agreement on trade, investment, and regulatory harmonisation now being negotiated between the United States and the European Commission, on behalf of EU member countries.
The editorial is based on a detailed analysis produced by Mark Weiss of the UK Faculty of Public Health; it reflects a groundswell of opposition to trade mega-agreements, including recent commentaries in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the New England Journal of Medicine and critiques by mainstream economists including Jeffrey Sachs and Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz.
