This hybrid event, organised by Professor Amelia Lake and Dr Helen Moore, will explore what we can learn from research and community led project delivery practices in the North East and North Cumbria, and how we can support more people and organisations to get involved in academic research.

Speakers include:

  • Keynote from Dr Megan Blake (University of Sheffield)
  • Dr Claire O’Malley & Andrea Burrows (Teesside University), and Joe Dunne (Middlesbrough Environment City) - exploring Social Supermarkets and what practical solutions they could present.
  • Dr Anna Haste (Teesside University) with colleague from Little Sprouts Community Interest Company (CIC) will explore the CIC’s model to addressing food access locally.
  • Dr Jo Smith (Teesside University / Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust) will share past and current work on Severe Mental Illness (SMI) and food insecurity.
  • Dr Zoe Bell (King's College London) and Dr Gina Nguyen (Newcastle University) will present work on maternal food insecurity.

What will I gain from this?

Food insecurity has a wide-reaching impact on the lives of people in the North East and beyond. The voluntary and community sector has innovated with local communities to find local solutions; academics work alongside the third sector to understand the wider impact and provide proof of concept. This event brings together researchers from the region and further afield who have worked alongside third sector partners to evidence this societal problem and consider approaches to reduce food insecurity.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions during the panel session and after presentations.

Together we will share practice, identify key issues and gaps, and explore how we could address these gaps to tackle the on-going issue of food insecurity.

Who is the event for?

Anyone and everyone who is interested in food insecurity, community led interventions, food policy and socio-economic inequalities from a public health perspective, including colleagues from community and voluntary sector, local authorities, health and care settings and public and community members and academic researchers.
