Meet a Public Partner
Sue Vout
Tell us a bit about your background
I’m Trust and Foundation Manager at Northumbria University and have worked at the university for 26 years. Outside of work, I’m the volunteer Chair of Durham Dogs and Cats Home and volunteer with Durham Police and Durham County Council to keep local people, students, rough sleepers and visitors safe. Through my personal life and volunteering, I have experience of autism, LGBTQ+, addiction and homelessness.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I spend most of my free time with friends and family and my three cats. I enjoy walking, running, cycling, going out for coffee, gardening and volunteering. I’m a big believer in the benefits that volunteering can bring to both individuals and communities and have met so many great friends and social connections as a result.
How did you first get involved in the Fuse public partner network?
I was introduced to the Fuse public partner network by an academic colleague I was working with for a grant funding application in my role at Northumbria University. I combine my experience in philanthropic funding with the academic ambitions of colleagues, and my own personal lived experiences.
What areas of public health research are you particularly interested in?
LGTBQ+, mental health, autism, alcohol addiction and homelessness.
Have you been involved in research before?
In my professional role, I’m increasingly building relationships with academic colleagues to identify and apply for external funding from trusts and foundations to support academic research. I am also keen to share my own personal lived experiences in the areas above through both my personal experience and volunteer work.
Why is having your voice heard in public health research important to you?
I believe that research must be driven by the people who have lived the experiences and challenges, working alongside academics who have extensive experience and networks in their areas of expertise. There isn’t a more perfect combination.
What one piece of advice would you share with someone curious about public involvement and engagement?
Never underestimate the power of your lived experience in helping people, no matter how daunting it may feel.
