Save the Date: Youth mental health and knife crime networking sandpit

  • Venue: Angel View Inn Hotel, Gateshead
  • Start: Thu, 10 Sep 2026 10:00:00 BST
  • End: Thu, 10 Sep 2026 14:30:00 BST

In September, Northumbria University and Teesside University will host an in-person regional youth mental health and knife crime networking sandpit. This knowledge-exchange and networking event is supported by funding from the NIHR Mental Health Incubator.

Knife crime involving 10 to 18 year-olds has increased significantly in England and Wales over the last decade and a high proportion of knife carrying goes undetected. Figures show the North East ranks high for youth knife-related assaults. Knife crime can have lasting and often lifelong impact on young people (both perpetrators and victims) and their life opportunities.

The event will explore how we can collectively work together to help shape regional priorities for future research and ways in which we can collaborate and work with members of the public and community partners to tackle key challenges in youth mental health and knife crime.

Places are limited to 20 participants. Places will be confirmed by the end of August.
