Understanding and treating panic disorder in adolescence (20 mins presentation, 10 mins Q&A).  Panic disorder affects around 1-3% of adolescents and has a negative impact on school, friendships, and other aspects of young people’s lives. However, it is currently not well understood in this age group. In the treatment of anxiety disorders in young people more generally, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) has the greatest evidence base (e.g., James et al., 2020) and a general form of CBT (aimed at treating any anxiety disorder) is typically used. However, for young people with panic disorder, outcomes from general CBT are unknown, and existing disorder-specific treatments are not easily implemented in routine care settings. In adults, disorder-specific individual cognitive therapy based on Clark’s (1986) cognitive model for panic disorder has been shown to be highly effective, even when delivered in a brief format (Clark et al., 1999). We have adapted this treatment to be suitable for adolescents, with input from young people with lived experience. In this presentation, I will begin by presenting what we know about panic disorder in adolescents and will then present findings from the PANDA feasibility randomised controlled trial comparing brief cognitive therapy to a general form of CBT for adolescents with panic disorder (https://doi.org/10.1186/ISRCTN14884288; for protocol see Waite, 2022). The feasibility study was carried out in a routine clinical service and examined whether a definitive trial could be conducted, using several well-defined criteria. The results provide a clear indication of the feasibility of a future definitive trial, as well as additional information to inform the design and maximise the successful completion of the trial.

Bio: Dr Waite is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Oxford. She is also an Honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Her primary clinical and research interests are anxiety disorders in adolescents, and she has recently led a feasibility randomised controlled trial on cognitive therapy for adolescent panic disorder. She has co-led the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)/Westminster Foundation-funded Co-SPACE study, tracking the mental health of children, young people and their parents/carers over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic. She has also edited and authored papers and books on anxiety and other common mental health problems for professionals, young people and their families.

Professor Raghu Lingam, University of New South Wales

Integrating clinical care in child health (20 mins presentation, 10 mins Q&A).  Integrated care  is considered to be a potential solution to  increasing hospital demand. This talk will consider the evidence for integrated paediatric health care  specifically considering  The Children & Young People’s Health Partnership (CYPHP)’s model of integrated care which was delivered and evaluated with more than 90,000 children in two boroughs of London. Results from this cluster randomised controlled trial and lessons learnt will be shared to allow adoption in other settings.

Bio: Raghu Lingam is Professor in Paediatric Population Health at the University of New South Wales, Honorary Professor at the Black Dog Institute and a Consultant Community Paediatrician in the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network. He has set up and leads the Population Child Health Research group at UNSW and co-leads of the Kids to Adults clinical academic group as part of Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise (SPHERE). Raghu is a senior clinical academic with clinical and research interests in children and young people’s health services research.
