'Twinkle, Twinkle Arti' children's storybook: Creative dissemination of research for children, families, and practitioners - Dr Cassey Muir, Newcastle University

Join us for the first ELAC lunch and learn seminar series, which will explore the co-production of a children’s storybook, called ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Arti’.

Fuse researchers based at Newcastle University, have co-produced a freely available children’s picture book and story time video to aid conversations between trusted adults and children who experience parental alcohol or drug use.

This book brings together the findings of two studies and disseminates the key messages for children, families, and practitioners using out of this world storytelling and colourful illustrations. The Safe Space project, led by Fuse research lead Ruth McGovern and Debbie Smart, found that many parents and caregivers find it difficult to talk to their child about substance use and the impact upon the child and family. Meanwhile, Fuse PhD research by Cassey Muir explored the experiences and support needs of children and young people, who found it difficult to know who to trust and wanted open conversations about parental substance use from as young as possible. A storybook resource that could be used within the home, school, or practice was identified as a priority emotional and social wellbeing tool. Twinkle, Twinkle Arti contributes a solution to address a gap in available interventions for young children impacted by parental substance use in a way that offers positive messages and validation not only to children but to parents/caregivers and practitioners who find it challenging to know how to broach this sensitive topic.

The researchers are in the process of sharing the resource with families and practitioners across the country and will be presenting on the co-production process, the key messages within the book, and feedback on the book to date. There will also be time for questions and answers from the audience.

REGISTER NOW – You will receive the joining details once you submit the registration form.  These will also be circulated a few days before the seminar.
