The role of Patient and Public Involvement in a complex cluster randomised controlled trial

About this event

This is the fifteenth webinar in the series and will describe the approach taken to Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in the NIHR funded Supporting Harm Reduction through Peer Support (SHARPS) trials. The SHARPS trials have developed and delivered a relational Peer Navigator intervention for people experiencing both homelessness and problems with substance use in England and Scotland. Meaningful PPI has been a priority through both the feasibility and definitive trial stages in the form of creating and sustaining an Experts by Experience (EbyE) Group. The presenting team is made up of members of the study team and the EbyE group who will speak about how engagement was maintained from the beginning of the 2018 feasibility study through to dissemination of the definitive trial. They will discuss why members wanted to be part of the group and what they gained from it, how the EbyE group has impacted the Peer Navigators’ practice and development, and how the group has steered the research approaches. The webinar will end with suggestions and considerations for other research teams, based on our experiences.
