Ever wondered what health literacy is all about? Want to know why it matters and how it can help?
We have partnered with the Health Literacy Team based at South Tyneside District Hospital to provide training that will help you to understand health literacy and how to use it every day, including in public health research. This half-day online event will be split into 3 sessions, with a break for lunch:
1. Health literacy awareness
This session will give you a short introduction to health literacy. You will find out what health literacy is and what you can do to make it better. You’ll learn how it affects patients, carers, families and the wider community and how better health literacy can make it easier for everyone to engage in their health and wellbeing.
2. How to write simply
Got some health information to write and don’t know where to start? Want to know how to make your writing clearer? This session will show you how to write clearly and simply. The team will give you tips and tools to help make your writing as readable as possible. When health information is clear and simple, people understand their health better. They can make more informed choices, and be more active in their health and wellbeing.
3. Misinformation
How do you know if the information you are reading is true? This session will help you to be more critical about information you come across. It will give you some skills to analyse information, to assess its reliability and you will take away some useful, trustworthy health information sources to share.
The event will end with a ‘call to action’ to ask “what will you do now to address health literacy in your daily practice?”
Who should attend?
This event is for anyone working in public health, including academics and researchers, practitioners and stakeholders from the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector, local authority, and NHS services, commissioners, policymakers and the public.
