About this event

This event aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines related to law and public health. It will explore perspectives from across these different disciplines on the overlaps between public health research and policies, health inequalities, legal regulation, and bioethics.

The first speaker is Professor John Coggon (Centre for Health, Law, and Society - University of Bristol Law School) who will discuss legal scholarship within public health research. Dr Ilke Turkmendag (Newcastle Law School) will then speak on the important social, ethical and philosophical questions about exploitation and control raised by maternal epigenetics* and the accessibility of pregnant bodies for biomedical intervention. Dr Dafni Lima (Durham Law School) will speak about her NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR) Transdisciplinary Placement with Fuse, lessons learned, and more broadly about undertaking interdisciplinary research as an Early Career Researcher.

This will be followed by a panel session with all three speakers, chaired by Professor Carolyn Summerbell (Deputy Director of Fuse, Professor in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, Durham University) who will also offer concluding remarks. This panel session will allow both the speakers and the audience to collaboratively discuss the opportunities offered by interdisciplinary research and explore potential areas of overlapping interest.

* Epigenetics is a field of molecular biology. It explains ways medical, nutritional and behavioural experiences influence expression of our genes. It looks at how these changes can be transmitted to subsequent generations. Impact of maternal behaviour on offspring’s health has become a focus of research over the past 20 years.

Who is this event for?

This event is for anyone working within public health, law, or related disciplines with an interest in the potential of interdisciplinary research across these areas in addressing health inequalities, public health outcomes, and regulatory challenges. Its main target audience is academics and researchers; practitioners and stakeholders from the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector, local authority, and NHS services; commissioners; policymakers and the public. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the overlaps of law and public health, discuss the opportunities and challenges of interdisciplinary research and engagement across these fields, explore areas of mutual interest and potential collaborations with other researchers and practitioners, and engage in regional research community building.
