Title: Exploring Evidence based Management in the Field: Management Knowledge(s) in Health Care Organisations‌

To what extent and how is Evidence Based Management (EBMgt) put into practice in organisations? The seminar seeks to contribute to the EBMgt debate previously dominated by commentary more than informed analysis. It is suggested that health care organisations are strategic sites for exploring EBMgt, given the spill over from the prior Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) movement. But which management evidence or broader management 'knowledges' do they absorb?

Drawing on comparative case study data from six major UK health care organisations, we find little 'pure' EBMGt but rather diverse management knowledges. We explore the relations between these favoured management knowledges and wider shifts in the UK political economy of health care, highlighting the politicality of such knowledges. Management consulting based texts and associated actors emerged as a significant influence. It is argued that these conditions make key conventions of the EBM/EMgt movement problematic and we need to consider alternative modes of management knowledge production.
