Welfare advice services improve people’s financial position; however, understanding their potential health impact is more difficult.

A realist evaluation, including scoping of the literature and interviews with Citizens Advice staff, will explore the potential health impacts of Citizens Advice services in Gateshead.

Initial theories around how Citizen Advice services may lead to health outcomes will be tested and refined in the next stage of research.

At a time of shrinking resources, decisions to invest or disinvest need to be founded on good evidence, but practitioners tell us of their difficulties in accessing, understanding and utilising research.

This study examined two schemes aimed at enhancing collaboration between academics and practitioners to see how these overcame known barriers to knowledge use.

Though both schemes had something significant to offer practitioners, significant cultural barriers remain in the path of simple knowledge translation.

NIHR School for Public Health Research researchers are working with several local authorities in England to understand what supports might help such decision-making.

Local authorities want local data, contextual factors and political priorities built into decision-making models and tools.
